Icy, myth-heavy black metal from the heart of Bergen. Ritualistic rhythms and jagged guitars that feel like a trek through a frozen forest.
Formed in 1992 in Bergen, Helheim is a cornerstone of the Norwegian black metal scene, specifically the 'Viking metal' sub-strain. Unlike many of their contemporaries who moved toward symphonic or commercial sounds, Helheim maintained a gritty, organic aesthetic that emphasizes atmosphere and Norse mythology.
The core trio of V'gandr, H'grimnir, and Hrymr has remained remarkably stable, allowing for a cohesive evolution from the raw aggression of 'Jormundgand' to the more progressive and avant-garde leanings of their later work like 'Geist'. Their sound is characterized by a unique interplay between harsh black metal aesthetics and traditional Norse elements, such as the use of the lur (a traditional horn) and Old Norse lyrics. Critically, they are respected for their integrity and their ability to evoke a specific sense of place and history without relying on folk-metal clichés. They occupy a cultural space between the raw 'True Norwegian Black Metal' of the early 90s and the more experimental, progressive metal movements of the 2000s.
