Thyrfing

Thyrfing formed in 1995 in Sweden, emerging from the same fertile underground that birthed the second wave of black metal but choosing to focus on Norse mythology and pagan themes. While initially a side project for members of Pantheon, the band quickly established a unique identity through their use of 'medieval' synth lines and a slower, more deliberate tempo than many of their contemporaries.

Their early work, such as the self-titled debut and 'Valdr Galga', helped define the symphonic side of Viking metal. However, the band underwent a significant stylistic shift with 2002's 'Vansinnesvisor', moving toward a darker, more dissonant, and experimental sound. This era introduced more complex songwriting and a gritty, almost avant-garde approach to vocals. Critically, they are respected for avoiding the 'cheesy' tropes of folk metal, instead maintaining a somber and serious tone. Their influence is felt across the pagan and black metal scenes, particularly in how they balance atmospheric keyboards with aggressive, heavy guitar work.
