Hemp Gru is a cornerstone of the Polish 'uliczny' (street) rap scene, formed in 1998 in the Mokotów borough of Warsaw. Comprised primarily of MCs Wilku and Bilon, the group emerged from the same cultural lineage as Molesta Ewenement, prioritizing authenticity and 'street cred' over commercial viability.
Their debut album, 'Klucz' (2004), is considered a seminal work in Polish hip-hop, establishing a sound characterized by heavy boom-bap production, prominent scratching, and lyrics centered on the 'DIIL' philosophy (loyalty, brotherhood, and independence). Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, they expanded their influence through the 'Hemp Armia' collective and their own clothing brand, DIIL, bridging the gap between music and lifestyle. Their sound identity is defined by a refusal to pivot toward trap or pop trends, instead refining a gritty, sample-heavy aesthetic that resonates with a working-class and underground audience. Critically, they are respected as guardians of the old-school ethos, maintaining a massive, loyal following despite minimal mainstream media support.
