Hixxy

Ian Hicks, known professionally as Hixxy, is a foundational figure in the evolution of UK Hardcore. Emerging from the Portsmouth rave scene in the early 1990s, he transitioned from a hip-hop background into the burgeoning world of high-tempo electronic music.

His 1995 track 'Toytown' served as a cultural flashpoint, bridging the gap between underground rave and mainstream chart success. As a co-founder of the Essential Platinum and Raver Baby labels, Hixxy provided the infrastructure for the 'Happy Hardcore' sound to flourish. His most significant contribution is arguably the 'Bonkers' compilation series, which became the definitive document of the genre, moving millions of units and elevating the status of hardcore DJs to superstar levels. Critically, Hixxy is respected for his technical precision and his role in evolving the genre from its sample-heavy, breakbeat-driven roots into a more melodic, synth-focused 'UK Hardcore' style. His influence persists in modern high-tempo dance music, from the 'nightcore' aesthetic to the resurgence of hyperpop and fast-paced club sounds.
