Intro

Illusion represents a unique chapter in British progressive rock, essentially serving as a second act for the original 1969 lineup of Renaissance. Formed in 1977 after the death of founding member Keith Relf, the group - consisting of Jim McCarty, Jane Relf, Louis Cennamo, and John Hawken - pivoted from the blues-inflected psych-folk of their youth toward a more refined, symphonic art-rock sound.

Their identity is defined by John Hawken's sophisticated, classically-influenced piano work and Jane Relf's ethereal soprano, which provided a softer alternative to the operatic style of Annie Haslam in the then-concurrent version of Renaissance. Despite releasing two critically respected albums on Island Records, 'Out of the Mist' and 'Illusion', they struggled to find a foothold in the burgeoning punk era. Historically, they are a vital link between the early folk-prog movement and the more melodic neo-prog that followed. Their influence is felt most strongly in the 'pastoral prog' sub-niche, where atmosphere and melodicism take precedence over technical showmanship.
