The Wishing Tree is the primary side project of Marillion guitarist Steve Rothery, formed in 1994 alongside vocalist Hannah Stobart. The project serves as a vehicle for Rothery's more folk-oriented and melodic sensibilities, moving away from the complex structures of neo-progressive rock toward a sound defined by pastoral atmospheres and 'ethereal' vocal performances.
Stobart was famously recruited after Rothery heard her covers of Tori Amos and All About Eve, seeking a voice that balanced purity with emotional depth. Their debut, 'Carnival of Souls' (1996), established a sound identity built on layered acoustic guitars, liquid electric leads, and mythic lyrical themes. Despite a long hiatus, the duo returned with 'Ostara' in 2009, further refining their blend of chamber folk and progressive pop. Critically, the project is viewed as a masterclass in melodic guitar texture, often cited by Marillion completists and fans of the '90s ethereal wave and dream-pop scenes for its high production values and evocative songwriting.
