Ima Robot

Ima Robot emerged from the late 90s Los Angeles scene as a sophisticated bridge between the burgeoning garage rock revival and the electronic-leaning dance-punk movement. Formed by Alex Ebert following the dissolution of The Lucky 13s, the band's initial lineup was a 'supergroup' of sorts, featuring Beck's rhythm section: bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen and drummer Joey Waronker.

This technical foundation allowed the band to execute complex, funk-influenced arrangements that were far more rhythmically advanced than their indie rock contemporaries. Their sound identity is built on the tension between Ebert's hip-hop influenced vocal phrasing and sharp, new wave-inspired instrumentation. While their 2003 debut on Virgin Records aligned them with the 'The' band explosion (The Faint, The Sounds), their later work like 'Another Man's Treasure' explored more psychedelic and soulful territories. Critically, they are often cited as a pivotal act in the 2000s dance-rock era, notable for their high-fidelity production and Ebert's charismatic, chameleon-like artistic evolution. Their cultural footprint was significantly expanded when 'Greenback Boogie' was selected as the theme for the long-running series Suits, cementing their sound in the public consciousness long after their peak activity.
