Imperial

Imperial is a foundational entity within the French extreme metal scene, specifically the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Formed in 1992 by Qojau and Skrow, they represent a bridge between the first wave of black metal's raw aggression and the rhythmic urgency of thrash and hardcore punk.

Unlike the more melodic or symphonic black metal acts of the late 90s, Imperial maintained a 'black-thrash' identity that emphasized speed, grit, and a DIY production aesthetic. Their early work, particularly 'Aux crépuscules' and 'Thrasheurs 13', is characterized by a thin, piercing guitar tone and a relentless percussive assault. Critically, they are viewed as pioneers who helped define the 'extreme' side of the French metal spectrum before the rise of the 'Orthodox' black metal movement. Their influence is most felt in the crust-metal and blackened thrash sub-scenes, where their unpretentious, high-energy approach remains a blueprint for underground acts seeking to avoid the tropes of more theatrical black metal.
