Inland Knights

Inland Knights, the Nottingham-based duo of Laurence Ritchie and Andy Riley, are pillars of the British house music scene. Formed in 1993, their origins are deeply rooted in the Smokescreen Sound System, a legendary collective known for throwing renegade free parties across Northern England.

This 'DIY' ethos and underground pedigree heavily informed their production style when they transitioned from promoters to producers in the late 90s. Their label, Drop Music, became a primary vehicle for their prolific output and helped define the 'Midlands' house sound - a blend of US West Coast 'jacking' house influences and UK tech-house sensibilities. Critically, they are lauded for their consistency and technical precision, particularly in their drum programming and sample manipulation. While many of their peers moved toward more commercial sounds, Inland Knights maintained a strictly underground focus, earning them a cult following among 'crate diggers' and house purists. Their influence is seen in the modern revival of '90s-style house, where their signature swinging 4/4 beats remain a gold standard for dancefloor efficacy.
