Iron Angel

Iron Angel is a pivotal figure in the 1980s German speed metal scene, hailing from Hamburg. Formed in 1983, they occupy a unique space between the burgeoning thrash movement (Kreator, Destruction) and the melodic power metal sound that would later be popularized by Helloween.

Their 1985 debut, 'Hellish Crossfire', is widely considered a cult classic of the genre, characterized by its relentless tempo and 'galloping' guitar work. Despite being frequently categorized as thrash, the band's members have historically identified as speed metal, emphasizing their focus on melody and traditional metal structures over pure dissonance. After a long hiatus starting in the late 80s, the band reunited in the late 2010s, releasing 'Hellbound' and 'Emerald Eyes', which successfully translated their high-speed aesthetic into a modern production context. Their influence is most felt in the 'New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal' (NWOTHM), where their blend of speed and melody serves as a foundational blueprint.
