Theatrical Finnish rock that blends avant-garde accordion with chamber-pop elegance. Intense, soulful, and deeply rooted in Nordic atmosphere.
Ismo Alanko Säätiö represents the most experimental and orchestrally ambitious phase of Ismo Alanko's career, a central figure in Finnish rock history. Formed in 1997 after his work with the legendary post-punk band Sielun Veljet, the Säätiö (Foundation) served as a vehicle for Alanko to move beyond traditional rock instrumentation.
The early period is defined by the inclusion of avant-garde accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen, whose percussive and electronic-tinged approach to the instrument redefined the band's sonic identity. Their work often fused elements of Finnish folk, progressive rock, and modern classical music, particularly on the critically acclaimed 'Hallanvaara'. Over its ten-year existence, the lineup shifted frequently, reflecting Alanko's restless creative nature. The project eventually transitioned toward a more direct rock sound before disbanding in 2007. Säätiö remains a touchstone for 'Suomirock' fans who value lyrical depth and musical boundary-pushing, bridging the gap between mainstream success and the Finnish avant-garde scene.
