K.I.A. (and his alter-ego Shinjuku Zulu) crafts a sound that feels like a sonic travelogue through the subconscious. It is rooted in the golden era of downtempo and trip-hop, but it avoids the clichés of the genre by incorporating a restless, global curiosity. The music is often thick with atmosphere, using heavy reverb and layered samples to create a sense of physical space, specifically the feeling of being an observer in a high-tech, high-density urban environment.

What truly distinguishes this project is the way it treats cultural artifacts. Rather than simple 'world music' fusion, Kirby Andersen uses his background in literature and his time in Japan to create a collage of ironies.
