Grand symphonic metal with a theatrical vampire heart. Elaborate orchestral layers meet shredding guitars and a rich, velvet baritone for the ultimate gothic drama.
Listening to KAMIJO is like being the protagonist in a high-budget gothic opera staged in a haunted French chateau. The music is unashamedly grand, combining the technical precision of power metal with the sweeping emotionality of a cinematic score. It is a world of lace, roses, and eternal life, where every snare hit feels like a decree and every guitar solo feels like a duel.
What sets him apart is his distinctive baritone voice, which eschews the typical high-pitched wailing of power metal for a smooth, crooning authority. His obsession with French history and vampire lore is not just a gimmick; it is baked into the songwriting, resulting in complex, multi-movement suites that feel more like storytelling than mere tracks. The production is consistently maximalist, filling every frequency with harpsichords, choirs, and dual-guitar harmonies.
For those new to his solo work, 'Heart' is the essential entry point. It perfectly captures his transition from the band-oriented sound of Versailles to a more expansive, cinematic vision. It is the ideal soundtrack for anyone who finds beauty in the dramatic, the ornate, and the slightly supernatural.
Yuji Kamijo, known mononymously as Kamijo, is a Japanese singer. He is best known as lead singer of the visual kei bands Lareine and Versailles. He has also been the head of two independent record labels; the first being Applause Records (formed in 2000), and currently Chateau Agency, which was formerly known as Sherow Artist Society from 2006 to 2016. Kamijo began his music career in 1994 with the rock band Lareine. After 13 years, including a brief period where he was the sole member and also formed the short-lived band New Sodmy, Kamijo ended Lareine in 2006. He then co-founded the symphonic power metal band Versailles in 2007. When they paused activities in 2012, Kamijo began a solo career the following year. Versailles resumed activities in December 2015.
