Kid Loco

Kid Loco, the moniker of Jean-Yves Prieur, emerged as a central figure in the French downtempo and trip-hop scene of the late 1990s. Originally a punk guitarist and later a producer for reggae and hip-hop acts like Mega Reefer Scratch, Prieur pivoted to electronic music under the Kid Loco name in 1996.

His breakout work, 'A Grand Love Story' (1997), established his signature sound: a blend of 'easy listening' aesthetics, psychedelic rock textures, and hip-hop rhythmic foundations. Unlike the darker Bristol trip-hop sound, Kid Loco's work is characterized by a romantic, almost cinematic softness and a heavy reliance on warm, analog sampling. He became a prolific remixer, lending his hazy touch to artists like Mogwai, Stereolab, and Pulp, further bridging the gap between indie rock and electronica. His career arc moved from the independent Yellow Productions to major labels with 'Kill Your Darlings' (2001), where he integrated more diverse global influences including Hindi funk. Critically, he is regarded as a master of mood-setting, often cited alongside acts like Air and Dimitri from Paris for defining the sophisticated 'French Touch' lounge sound of the turn of the millennium.
