Aggressive, frost-rimed metal that carries the weight of Norse history. Melodic death metal with a rugged, folk-stinking soul for cold nights and long journeys.
King of Asgard was formed in 2008 in Mjölby, Sweden, by Karl Beckman and Karsten Larsson, both veterans of the seminal Viking metal act Mithotyn. This lineage is crucial to their sound identity, as they effectively picked up the mantle of Mithotyn's rugged, guitar-driven approach to Norse mythology while infusing it with the higher production standards and technical precision of the 21st-century Swedish melodic death metal scene. Their sound is characterized by a deliberate rejection of 'plastic' symphonic elements in favor of a raw, organic aesthetic they describe as 'folk-stinking.'
Throughout their career, spanning releases on Metal Blade and Trollmusic, the band has maintained a consistent critical reputation for authenticity. While they share DNA with melodic death metal, their atmosphere leans closer to the somber, nature-worshipping side of black metal. They occupy a specific niche between the accessible melodies of Amon Amarth and the harsher, more avant-garde tendencies of Enslaved. Their later work, particularly 'Frôðr', shows an evolution toward darker, more ritualistic textures, cementing their status as guardians of a specific, non-commercialized strain of Viking metal.
