Intro

KOAN Sound offers a listening experience that feels like watching a high-speed camera capture a drop of water in slow motion. Their music is defined by an incredible level of sonic detail, where every click, pop, and bass swell is placed with surgical precision. It is electronic music that manages to feel organic rather than mechanical, often incorporating foley and natural textures into a framework of heavy, funky grooves.

What truly sets them apart is their ability to balance aggression with beauty. While they emerged from the dubstep and glitch-hop scenes, they moved away from the 'brostep' cliches to focus on 'neuro' sound design: complex, evolving basslines that sound like they are breathing or shifting shape. Their rhythmic sensibility is heavily influenced by funk and jazz, giving their tracks a 'swing' that is rare in high-tech electronic production.

Start with the 'Funk Blaster' EP for their high-energy, groove-heavy side, or dive into 'Polychrome' for a more cinematic, immersive experience. It is the perfect music for when you want to feel completely focused or when you want to marvel at the sheer possibility of modern audio engineering.

KOAN Sound ( KOH-ən; named after the word kōan) is an English electronic music production duo from Bristol, consisting of Will Weeks and Jim Bastow. A track from the Max Out EP is titled "One Hand Clap" – a reference to a well-known kōan with the implied answer of silence. They initially gained recognition as dubstep producers, with earlier popular tracks including "Akira". Some of their many types of music includes glitch hop, neurohop, and Drum & Bass. The duo have since released music on various labels including Inspected Records and Owsla, and have worked with a number of other artists, including producer Asa and singer Ed Sheeran.
