Kode9

Deep, dread-filled basslines and skeletal rhythms that feel like a cold night in South London. Intellectual electronic music with a heavy, physical pulse.

Intro

Listening to Kode9 feels like stepping into a high-definition noir film where the shadows are made of sub-bass. The music is characterized by a profound sense of space and silence, punctuated by sharp, syncopated percussion and low-frequency vibrations that you feel in your chest before you hear them in your ears. It is the sound of the 'hardcore continuum' slowed down and stripped to its haunting essentials.

What sets him apart is the intellectual rigor behind the rhythms. As a philosopher of sound, his tracks often explore the concept of 'sonic warfare,' using frequency and repetition to create a physical and psychological affect. Whether collaborating with the late Spaceape for dread-filled poetry or exploring the high-speed jitters of footwork, there is always a sense of calculated, cold precision at play.

Start with 'Memories of the Future' to experience the foundational blueprint of atmospheric dubstep. It captures a specific era of London's underground culture: paranoid, murky, and deeply soulful in its own mechanical way. From there, move to 'Escapology' to hear how he translates those early instincts into a more complex, multi-layered digital landscape.

Steve Goodman, known as Kode9 (born 1973) is a Scottish electronic music artist, DJ, and founder of the Hyperdub record label. He was one of the founding members of the early dubstep scene with his late collaborator The Spaceape. He has released four full-length albums: 2006's Memories of the Future and 2011's Black Sun (both with The Spaceape), Nothing (2015), Escapology and Astro-Darien (2022). As owner of Hyperdub, Goodman has signed artists such as Burial, DJ Rashad, Zomby, and Fatima Al Qadiri. Goodman has a PhD in philosophy from the University of Warwick and has published a book, Sonic Warfare: Sound, Affect, and the Ecology of Fear, in 2009.
