Kolmas Nainen is a cornerstone of the 'Suomirock' movement, originating from Alavus, Finland in 1982. Fronted by the prolific songwriter Pauli Hanhiniemi, the band achieved national prominence after a strong showing in the 1984 Finnish Rock Championships.
Their sound identity is characterized by a blend of roots-rock, blues, and pop-sensible melodies, often compared to the earnestness of Heartland Rock but filtered through a distinctly Finnish lens of melancholy and realism. Throughout the late 80s and early 90s, they released a string of critically and commercially successful albums, most notably 'Hyvää ja kaunista' (1990). Their career arc includes a significant hiatus starting in 1994, followed by a highly successful comeback in 2009. They occupy a cultural position as 'everyman' poets, bridging the gap between the rebellious energy of punk-influenced rock and the sophisticated storytelling of the Finnish singer-songwriter tradition. Their influence is seen in nearly every Finnish rock band that prioritizes lyrical depth and organic instrumentation over electronic trends.
