Koma & Bones

Koma & Bones, consisting of Andy Duckmanton, Chris Kirkbride, and Jude Sebastian (Proteus), emerged as pivotal figures in the UK breakbeat scene during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Based in Lancaster, their sound was a departure from the more commercial 'big beat' sound of Brighton, instead favoring a darker, more technical aesthetic often labeled as 'Nu-Breaks.'

The inclusion of Jude Sebastian, who brought a background in drum and bass production, infused the project with a sophisticated understanding of sub-bass and complex percussion programming. Their career peak was marked by the release of 'Blinded by Science' on the TCR (Thursday Club Recordings) label, a cornerstone of the breaks movement. Critically, they were lauded for bridging the gap between the raw energy of rave and the polished production of modern electronica. Their influence is felt in the way they integrated industrial textures and cinematic atmosphere into dancefloor-focused tracks, a precursor to the more aggressive 'tech-breaks' that followed.
