A collision of free jazz and industrial noise that makes most rock bands sound tame. Ferocious, loud, and brilliantly chaotic improvisational violence.
Last Exit was a seminal avant-garde jazz supergroup active from 1986 to the early 1990s. The lineup consisted of four titans of experimental music: guitarist Sonny Sharrock, saxophonist Peter Brötzmann, bassist Bill Laswell, and drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson.
Their sound identity is defined by an uncompromising fusion of free improvisation, heavy metal volume, and industrial textures. While most of their discography consists of blistering live recordings from European tours, their 1988 studio album Iron Path showcased a more atmospheric, production-heavy side of the band influenced by Laswell's studio techniques. Culturally, they served as a vital bridge between the New York 'No Wave' scene and the European free improv tradition, gaining a following among punk and noise rock fans who found traditional jazz too polite. Critical consensus views them as one of the most 'violent' and physically intense ensembles in jazz history, a reputation solidified by Sharrock's 'shards of glass' guitar style and Brötzmann's 'overblown' saxophone technique. The group disbanded following Sharrock's death in 1994, leaving behind a legacy of musical democracy practiced at maximum volume.
