Velvety vocals that bridge the gap between 1940s torch songs and modern indie folk. Intimate, sophisticated music for quiet rooms and long reflections.
Lex Land sounds like a secret whispered in a crowded room. Her music occupies a unique space where the disciplined elegance of a classical soprano meets the smoky, relaxed atmosphere of a late-night jazz club. There is a tactile warmth to her recordings, often featuring dry, close-mic vocals that make it feel as though she is performing just a few feet away from you. The arrangements are tasteful and uncluttered, allowing the natural timbre of her voice to carry the emotional weight.
What truly distinguishes her is the 'ghost of Judy Garland' quality mentioned by critics. She possesses a rare ability to inhabit a song with old-world theatricality without ever feeling like a caricature. Her phrasing is rooted in jazz, yet her songwriting follows the confessional, narrative path of modern indie-folk. This duality creates a timeless feeling, making her work sound equally at home on a vintage turntable or a modern digital playlist.
Start with 'Orange Days on Lemon Street' to hear her foundational blend of folk-pop and jazz sensibilities. For those who prefer her more atmospheric, torch-singer side, her covers of 'Falling' or 'Nothing Compares 2 U' showcase her ability to strip a song down to its emotional marrow using only her breath and a few well-placed chords.
