Lower Dens

Hypnotic, synth-driven pop with a post-punk heart. Androgynous vocals and motorik rhythms create a sense of cool, late-night mystery for urban explorers.

Intro

Lower Dens creates music that feels like a sleek, silver vehicle moving through a fog-covered city at midnight. It is a sound defined by precision and atmosphere, where the steady, driving pulse of Krautrock meets the shimmering textures of dream pop. Jana Hunter’s voice is the focal point: a rich, androgynous baritone that feels both intimate and detached, delivering lines that probe the boundaries of human identity and technology.

What truly sets them apart is their evolution from guitar-heavy indie rock into a more sophisticated, synth-led aesthetic. They use repetition not as a drone, but as a hypnotic hook, layering clean guitar melodies over steady, mechanical drum beats. There is a deep intellectualism in the songwriting, often touching on themes of transhumanism and social structures, yet the music remains physically engaging through its rhythmic consistency.

To understand their world, start with the album Escape From Evil. It represents their most accessible peak, blending 80s-inflected synth-pop hooks with their signature moody depth. From there, move backward to Nootropics for a more experimental, atmospheric journey into the intersection of humanity and the digital age.

Lower Dens was an American alternative indie pop band from Baltimore, Maryland, United States. The band was formed in 2010 by Jana Hunter, Geoff Graham, Abram Sanders and Will Adams. Lower Dens has released four albums: their debut on Gnomonsong and a follow-up album on Ribbon Music. Their third album, Escape from Evil, was released on March 31, 2015, on Ribbon Music.
