Made in Brazil is the longest-running rock band in Brazilian history, formed in 1967 by brothers Oswaldo and Celso Vecchione. Emerging from the Pompéia district of São Paulo, they became the definitive voice of Brazilian hard rock.
Their sound is characterized by a high-energy blend of boogie-woogie, blues, and proto-metal, often featuring elaborate vocal arrangements and a rotating lineup that has seen over 100 members. Their 1974 debut is a landmark of the genre, but it was their mid-70s work, particularly 'Jack, O Estripador' and 'Paulicéia Desvairada,' that cemented their status as urban legends. The latter album was a sanitized version of 'Massacre,' a project famously suppressed by the military dictatorship's censors due to its provocative themes. In the 1990s, the band leaned heavily into their blues roots, a transition that felt natural given their career-long obsession with the genre's grit. They remain a vital link between the first wave of Brazilian rock and the modern independent scene, representing a working-class, no-nonsense alternative to the more intellectualized Tropicália movement.
