Memoryhouse emerged in 2009 as a collaboration between composer Evan Abeele and photographer Denise Nouvion. Originally conceived as a multi-media project to combat the 'paralysis of winter' in Ontario, their sound is deeply rooted in neo-classical structures filtered through the lens of dream pop and the then-emerging chillwave movement.
Their early work, particularly 'The Years', is defined by ambient loops and aquatic guitar textures that drew immediate comparisons to Beach House and Cocteau Twins. After signing to Sub Pop, they moved toward a more structured indie-pop sound on 'The Slideshow Effect', though they maintained their signature 'hazy' production. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between the bedroom-pop aesthetics of the late 2000s and the more sophisticated, classically-informed dream pop of the 2010s. Their influence is felt in the 'sad girl aesthetic' and the visual-first approach to music marketing that became standard on platforms like Tumblr and Instagram.
