Mesita

Mesita is the long-running solo project of James Cooley, a multi-instrumentalist whose work bridges the gap between the DIY bedroom pop explosion and technical math-rock. Emerging from Colorado before relocating to Chicago and later Brooklyn, Cooley has maintained a fiercely independent career, handling nearly every aspect of writing, recording, and production.

His early work, such as 'Cherry Blossoms', leaned into acoustic folk and plunderphonics, but he quickly pivoted toward a signature sound defined by clean, tapped electric guitar lines and syncopated electronic percussion. The 2011 album 'Here's to Nowhere' remains a critical touchstone, blending the melodic sensibilities of The Postal Service with the rhythmic complexity of American Football. Throughout the 2010s, Cooley's work evolved to incorporate more 'Reason'-based digital production, though he never lost the 'human' element of his breathy, close-mic'd vocals. Culturally, Mesita occupies a unique space as a 'musician's musician' within the indie-pop sphere, frequently cited for his inventive guitar techniques and his ability to convey deep emotional resonance through high-density arrangements. His later work, particularly 'Littleton', marked a shift toward more explicit narrative storytelling following personal tragedy, further cementing his reputation for uncompromising honesty.
