Meursault

Meursault is the primary vehicle for Edinburgh-based songwriter Neil Pennycook, emerging in 2006 as a cornerstone of the Song, By Toad Records collective. The project is defined by a hybrid sound often termed 'folktronica,' though Pennycook’s version is far more aggressive and punk-influenced than the genre's typical pastoral leanings.

Their sound identity is built on the contrast between traditional folk instrumentation (banjo, acoustic guitar, strings) and harsh electronic textures (bit-crushed beats, synth drones, and tape hiss). Lyrically, the project is heavily influenced by absurdist philosophy, taking its name from the protagonist of Albert Camus’s 'The Stranger.' Over a career spanning nearly two decades, Meursault has evolved from the glitch-folk of 'Pissing on Bonfires' to the more sophisticated, narrative-heavy chamber folk of 'Crow Hill.' They occupy a unique space in the Scottish indie scene, bridging the gap between the DIY folk-punk of the Fence Collective and the more experimental electronic rock of The Phantom Band. Critically, they are highly regarded for their dynamic live performances and Pennycook's uncompromising vocal delivery.
