Microstoria is a seminal experimental electronic duo formed in 1994 in Düsseldorf, Germany, consisting of Markus Popp (Oval) and Jan St. Werner (Mouse on Mars).

The project represents a critical bridge between the conceptual 'system-based' music of the early 90s and the more emotive, textured ambient music that followed. While Popp's work in Oval often focused on the 'failure' of digital media (skipping CDs), Microstoria allowed for more traditional notions of authorship and improvisation. Their sound is characterized by granular synthesis, micro-percussion, and a unique 'digital warmth' achieved through the layering of processed tones. Their second album, '_snd', is widely regarded as a masterpiece of the ambient genre, appearing on numerous all-time best lists. Historically, they are essential to the Mille Plateaux label's legacy and the development of the 'glitch' aesthetic, influencing a generation of laptop musicians from Fennesz to Taylor Deupree.
