Oval

Oval is the primary vehicle for German artist Markus Popp, a figure whose work in the early 1990s fundamentally altered the trajectory of electronic music by pioneering the 'glitch' aesthetic. Originally a group, Oval became a solo project for Popp after 1995. The project's foundational technique involved the deliberate physical degradation of compact discs, using felt-tip pens and tape to create predictable but irregular skipping patterns. These fragments were then sampled and reassembled into complex, multi-layered compositions. This process challenged the prevailing 'hi-fi' obsession of the era, finding beauty in the failure of digital media.

Popp's influence extends far beyond his own discography; his 'Ovalprocess' software and his collaborations with Jan St. Werner as Microstoria helped define the 'clicks and cuts' era of the late 90s. His work is characterized by a high degree of conceptual rigor and a disdain for traditional musicality, yet it often results in surprisingly accessible, melodic textures. Critically, Oval is viewed as a bridge between academic computer music and the underground electronica scene, influencing everyone from Björk to contemporary IDM producers.
