Monsoon was a short-lived but highly influential British trio that pioneered the fusion of Indian classical music with Western pop and new wave. Formed in 1981 by vocalist Sheila Chandra, producer Steve Coe, and bassist Martin Smith, the group was the first to bring 'Indi-pop' to a mainstream UK audience.
Their sound identity is defined by the integration of traditional Hindustani instruments like the sitar and tabla into a sophisticated 80s synth-pop framework. Chandra's vocal style, characterized by its purity and precision, bridged the gap between traditional Indian singing and the art-pop sensibilities of the era. Despite their commercial success with the hit 'Ever So Lonely,' the band dissolved in 1982 due to creative friction with their label, Phonogram, who sought to push them toward a more conventional pop sound. Their sole album, 'Third Eye,' was released posthumously in 1983. Monsoon's legacy is significant as a precursor to the Asian Underground movement of the 1990s, influencing artists like Talvin Singh and Nitin Sawhney by proving that South Asian musical traditions could be successfully synthesized with contemporary electronic production without losing their soul.
