Monster Movie

Shimmering, hazy dream pop with a gentle motorik pulse. Soft-focus guitars and breathy vocals that feel like a warm memory of a rainy afternoon.

Intro

Monster Movie sounds like the softest parts of a dream you can't quite remember upon waking. It is built on a foundation of shimmering, jangly guitars that are layered until they become a warm, sonic fog. The vocals are never aggressive; instead, they drift through the mix like a gentle breeze, providing a sense of comfort and quiet melancholy that feels deeply personal yet expansive.

What sets them apart is their specific lineage. Founded by Christian Savill of Slowdive, the band carries the DNA of classic British shoegaze but strips away the wall-of-sound aggression in favor of a more melodic, indie-pop sensibility. There is a subtle Krautrock influence in their steady, hypnotic rhythms, but it is always filtered through a lens of 1960s pop hooks and Sarah Records-style intimacy.

Start with 'All Lost' or 'Last Night Something Happened' to experience their peak atmospheric songwriting. These albums capture a specific kind of suburban magic, turning mundane moments into cinematic, reverb-drenched vignettes that reward repeated, close listening.

Monster Movie is a British dream pop band originally formed by Christian Savill and Sean Hewson in 1989. The band reformed in 1999, with Rachel Goldstar. In 2009, Ryan Graveface and Sophie Pittaway made recording contributions. In 2011, seeking to do more live performances, Gregg Cox and Sam Williams joined on bass and drums, respectively. Savill previously played as guitarist in shoegazing band Slowdive, until he left shortly before they changed musical direction and became Mojave 3. Both Savill and Hewson had played together in the pre-Slowdive band Eternal. They released one single on Sarah Records in 1990. In September 2009, Monster Movie announced the completion of their album Everyone Is A Ghost. The album was released by Graveface Records in March 2010. Along with occasional radio airplay on Seattle's KEXP, DJ John Richards described their debut album as "very beautiful, jangly atmospheric pop featuring smoothly strummed guitar."
