Mortifera

Mortifera is a cornerstone of the French depressive black metal (DSBM) scene, primarily the vision of Noktu (of Celestia and Drakkar Productions). Formed in 2001, the project is a vital link in the evolution of 'Black 'n' Gaze,' particularly through its early collaboration with Neige (Alcest).

While many DSBM acts rely on repetitive, simplistic misery, Mortifera utilizes a more sophisticated, melodic approach rooted in French romanticism and graveyard aesthetics. Their sound identity is defined by thin, icy guitar tones, mid-tempo drumming that avoids excessive blast beats, and a murky, reverb-heavy production style that creates a sense of physical distance. Throughout their career, from the seminal 'Vastiia Tenebrd Mortifera' to later works like 'Bleüu De Morte,' the project has maintained a consistent focus on themes of mortality and celestial agony.
