Mysticum

Mysticum is widely credited as the pioneer of industrial black metal, emerging from the Asker scene in Norway during the early 1990s. Originally formed as Sabazios, the band pivoted to a sound that integrated drum machines and electronic textures, a radical departure from the 'True Norwegian Black Metal' ethos of the time.

Their association with Euronymous and the Deathlike Silence Productions label cemented their status in the inner circle, despite their unconventional use of technology. Their 1996 debut, 'In the Streams of Inferno', remains a foundational text for the subgenre, influencing later acts like Thorns, Dødheimsgard, and Aborym. Critically, they are viewed as the 'third pillar' of the early Norwegian sound alongside the more traditional folk and symphonic branches. Their career is marked by a long hiatus between their debut and the 2014 follow-up 'Planet Satan', which maintained their signature 'mechanical black metal' aesthetic while updating the production values for a new era. They represent the intersection of extreme metal and the nihilism of industrial electronic music.
