Mystifier

Mystifier is a foundational pillar of the Brazilian black metal scene, formed in Salvador, Bahia, in 1989. Led by founding member Beelzeebubth, the band emerged from a volatile underground culture, famously uniting with local punks to purge skinhead elements from their scene.

Their sound is distinct from the 'Norwegian' style, characterized by a 'cavernous' production aesthetic, low-tuned guitars, and a heavy emphasis on occult and esoteric lyrical themes, particularly Aleister Crowley and Goetic theurgy. Their early 90s output, specifically 'Wicca' and 'Goetia', is considered essential to the development of 'Blasphemous Black Metal,' influencing the 'war metal' subgenre through their association with acts like Blasphemy and Sarcofago. Critically, they are lauded for maintaining a raw, uncompromising identity while incorporating sophisticated, albeit primitive, keyboard arrangements that enhance their ritualistic atmosphere. They remain a vital force in the global extreme metal underground, representing a specific South American lineage of dark, rhythmic extremity.
