NATURAL CALAMITY

Dusty, desert-tinged trip-hop that feels like a lonely midnight drive. Warm analog textures and surf-rock guitars for moments of quiet introspection.

Intro

Natural Calamity sounds like the intersection of a Tokyo high-rise and a desolate Mojave landscape. Their music is built on a foundation of slow, heavy trip-hop beats, but it is colored by the twang of surf-rock guitars and the warmth of analog tape. It is electronic music that feels organic and weathered, as if the master tapes were left out in the sun for a decade before being rediscovered.

What sets them apart from their Shibuya-kei contemporaries is their rejection of kitsch in favor of a moody, earthy sincerity. While others were sampling French pop and bossa nova, Shunji Mori and Kuni Sugimoto were digging into bluesy textures and psychedelic atmospheres. The addition of Stephanie Heasley’s vocals adds a haunting, countrified layer that makes the music feel both familiar and deeply alien.

Start with 'And That's Saying a Lot' to hear their most refined blend of groove and atmosphere. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who loves the smoky vibes of Portishead but wants something with a bit more grit and open-road expansiveness.
