NONA REEVES

Effortlessly cool Japanese pop that bridges the gap between 80s soul and modern indie. Polished, groovy, and perpetually ready for a night out in the city.

Intro

NONA REEVES sounds like the most stylish party in Tokyo that you were actually invited to. Their music is a masterclass in 'good vibes' that never feels shallow, anchored by a deep reverence for the golden age of soul, disco, and 80s pop. You'll hear the snap of a perfectly recorded snare, the warmth of analog synthesizers, and basslines that demand a physical response. It is music that feels expensive but remains incredibly accessible.

What truly sets them apart is Gota Nishidera's vocal delivery, which often slides into a smooth falsetto that recalls the best of Prince or Michael Jackson, but filtered through a distinctly Japanese indie-pop lens. While many of their contemporaries in the Shibuya-kei scene leaned into kitsch or irony, NONA REEVES has always played it straight with high-level musicianship and a genuine love for the groove. Their arrangements are dense and sophisticated, yet they never lose sight of the three-minute pop hook.

Start with the album 'DESTINY' to hear them at their most iconic. It captures that turn-of-the-millennium optimism where funk and rock collided in the Tokyo underground. If you want something more recent that proves they haven't lost their step, 'FOREVER FOREVER' offers a more mature but equally danceable take on their signature urban sound.
