Normaal

Normaal is the foundational architect of 'boerenrock' (farmers' rock), a subgenre that merged Anglo-American blues-rock with Dutch regional identity. Formed in 1973 by Bennie Jolink and Jan Manschot, the band emerged as a counter-cultural response to the dominance of disco, glam rock, and the perceived elitism of the Randstad (the urban West of the Netherlands).

Their decision to sing in the Achterhooks dialect was revolutionary, validating regional Low Saxon culture in a national media landscape that previously treated it as a punchline. Musically, they are heavily influenced by the swampy grooves of Creedence Clearwater Revival and the driving boogie of Status Quo, characterized by simple, effective chord structures and Jolink's raspy, authoritative vocals. Their career arc saw them move from shocking outliers to national institutions, holding the record for the most Top 40 hits in the Netherlands without ever reaching number one. In recent years, they have transitioned into a legacy act with significant political weight, as seen in the 2019 viral resurgence of 'De boer dat is de keerl' during Dutch farmer protests.
