Deep, gravelly vocals meeting high-voltage Texas blues. It is gritty, swampy rock and roll built for neon-lit bars and long highway drives.
Omar and the Howlers deliver a brand of blues rock that feels like it was forged in the humidity of a Mississippi juke joint and polished in the heat of an Austin dive bar. The sound is anchored by Kent “Omar” Dykes’ unmistakable voice, a subterranean growl that sounds like it has been cured in bourbon and smoke. It is heavy, rhythmic, and unapologetically raw, leaning into the 'howl' that gives the band its name.
What sets them apart is the sheer physical weight of the music. While many blues-rock acts aim for technical flash, Omar prioritizes the 'stomp.' The guitar work is thick with sustain and feedback, often referred to as his 'overtone' style, creating a wall of sound that feels more like a force of nature than a standard three-piece arrangement. It is music that understands the primal connection between a steady boogie beat and a distorted riff.
Start with 'Hard Times in the Land of Plenty' to hear them at their commercial and creative peak. It captures the band's ability to turn social observation into a high-energy anthem. From there, dive into 'Big Delta' for a deeper look at their swamp-influenced roots and Dykes' mastery of the blues-rock form.
