Numbers

Numbers is a seminal fixture of the early 2000s San Francisco underground, emerging from the same art-punk milieu that produced acts like Erase Errata. Formed in 2000, the trio of Indra Dunis, Eric Slatkin, and Dave Broekema (later featuring various configurations) carved out a niche by blending the abrasive textures of No Wave with the rhythmic drive of synth-punk. Their sound identity is built on 'brittle' sonic textures, characterized by cheap analog synths, jagged guitar stabs, and a 'yelping' vocal style that emphasizes rhythmic punctuation over traditional melody.

Their career arc saw them evolve from a chaotic, improvisational 'living room' band into a more focused, epic unit, particularly on releases like 'In My Mind All the Time' (2004) and 'Now You Are This' (2007). They occupied a unique cultural position as a bridge between the post-hardcore/jazzcore scenes and the burgeoning electronic dance-punk movement of the mid-aughts. Critically, they are respected for their refusal to smooth over their sound, maintaining a lo-fi, high-tension aesthetic that influenced the later wave of 'weird' synth-pop and noise-rock.
