Ofdrykkja emerged from the Swedish depressive suicidal black metal (DSBM) scene in 2012, founded by members with histories in seminal acts like Apati and Lepra. While their early work, specifically 'A Life Worth Losing', adhered to the raw, self-destructive tropes of the genre, the band's trajectory has been one of significant sonic and spiritual evolution.

They have increasingly integrated neofolk, ambient, and post-rock elements, moving toward a sound that emphasizes naturalism and recovery over pure nihilism. This shift is most evident on 'Gryningsvisor' and 'After the Storm', where the influence of Nordic folk traditions and the isolation of the Swedish landscape take center stage. Critically, they are respected for their authenticity, avoiding the theatricality common in black metal to focus on genuine experiences of addiction, mental health, and the solace found in nature. Their sound is characterized by a blend of acoustic instrumentation, ethereal clean vocals, and the lingering ghosts of black metal production, positioning them as a bridge between extreme metal and contemporary dark folk.
