Elegant grand piano meets cosmic modular synths. A sophisticated blend of jazz-inflected rock and ambient textures for late-night reflection and deep focus.
Page McConnell's solo work is a masterclass in keyboard-driven atmosphere, moving far beyond his role as the 'Chairman of the Boards.' His sound is anchored by the organic warmth of a Steinway grand piano, but it is frequently colored by a vast museum of vintage electronics. From the funky, syncopated clavinet grooves of his early solo outings to the icy, extraterrestrial modular synth explorations of his later ambient work, the music feels both grounded and weightless.
What distinguishes McConnell is his restraint. While his technical proficiency is immense, he prioritizes the 'space between the notes,' creating a melodic vocabulary that feels conversational rather than performative. His vocals are equally understated, delivered with a gentle, breathy sincerity that invites the listener into a private, interior world. It is music that rewards close attention but never demands it, functioning as both a complex harmonic study and a soothing sonic balm.
Newcomers should start with his 2007 self-titled debut for a perfect bridge between his rock roots and sophisticated songwriting. For those seeking a purely atmospheric experience, 'Maybe We're The Visitors' offers a stunning, wordless journey into modular synthesis recorded in the stark landscapes of Iceland.
