High-energy Orange County rap-rock with a surprising reggae twist. Sun-drenched, positive, and built for the skate park.
PAX217 sounds like the exact intersection of the late-90s skate-punk scene and the burgeoning rap-rock movement, but with a distinctively bright, California-coast filter. Their music is characterized by chunky, distorted guitar riffs that suddenly give way to syncopated reggae upstrokes, all anchored by a rhythm section that feels both heavy and agile. David Tosti’s vocals bridge the gap between rhythmic rapping and melodic, anthemic choruses that feel designed for shouting along in a crowded club.
What truly sets them apart from the aggressive nu-metal of their era is the infusion of island rhythms and a pervasive sense of optimism. While their peers were often leaning into angst and darkness, PAX217 utilized the turntable scratches and heavy bass of the genre to deliver messages of peace and spiritual searching. The production is crisp and punchy, typical of the early 2000s Orange County sound, making it feel both nostalgic and remarkably polished.
Start with their debut album, Twoseventeen, particularly the tracks 'A.M.' and 'Prism.' These songs perfectly capture their ability to blend aggressive rock energy with laid-back grooves. It is the ideal soundtrack for anyone who grew up on a diet of 311, P.O.D., and Sublime but wanted something with a more direct, alternative rock edge.
