Peace Division

Dark, dubbed-out tribal house with a relentless percussive drive. Hypnotic rhythms for windowless basements and late-night city transit.

Intro

Peace Division sounds like the interior of a legendary London nightclub at the exact moment the smoke machine obscures your vision. It is heavy, rhythmic, and unapologetically dark, built on a foundation of thick, syncopated tribal drums and subterranean basslines that feel like they are vibrating through the floorboards rather than coming from the speakers. There is a distinct dub influence here, with echoes and delays stretching out vocal fragments and synth stabs into ghostly, atmospheric textures.

What sets them apart is their refusal to lean on the bright, melodic tropes of mainstream house. Instead, Clive Henry and Justin Drake lean into the 'dark daze' aesthetic, creating music that is functional for the dancefloor but emotionally complex in its brooding intensity. The percussion is always the star, often featuring complex, interlocking patterns that owe as much to early hip-hop and electro as they do to the tribal house movement they helped define.

For those new to their sound, the debut album 'Junkyard Funk' is the essential starting point. It captures the duo at their peak, blending gritty urban textures with sophisticated electronic production. It is the kind of music that rewards loud volume and a darkened room, perfect for when you want to lose yourself in a groove that feels both ancient and futuristic.

Peace Division is a house music and remix duo, comprising Clive Henry and Justin Drake. Together, they have proven to be one of the most prolific UK tribal house producers starting with their first record in 1994. The duo have released EPs, remixes, and singles on Kickin Records, Eukahouse, Hooj Choons, Proletkult, Low Pressings, Junior, and NRK Sound Division among others. Peace Division have also produced remixes for a wide variety of music artists including Moby, Superchumbo and Yothu Yindi. Peace Division got its name from a UN peace keeping force. Justin Drake is the engineer of the duo and Clive Henry gained experience as a member of the Flying Records crew DJing at the Gosh and The Bone parties in London. Clive Henry started the Low Pressings label with X-Press 2 member/collaborator and long time friend Rocky. The Peace Division single "Body & Soul" sold over 12,000 copies worldwide on vinyl and their debut album Junkyard Funk was released in 2000.
