Phantasmagoria

Phantasmagoria is a Detroit-based electronic duo consisting of Christopher Jarvis and Lianna Vanicelli, formed in 2010. Emerging during the height of the chillwave and hypnagogic pop movements, they carved out a niche by blending the gritty, industrial heritage of their hometown with a surprisingly bright, beach-oriented aesthetic. Their sound identity is defined by heavy use of vintage synth emulations, side-chained compression that creates a 'breathing' rhythmic effect, and Vanicelli's ethereal, often unintelligible vocal delivery.

Throughout their career, particularly between 2011 and 2013, the duo was prolific, releasing a series of EPs and the standout full-length 'Currents'. They are often associated with the 'blog-rock' era of music discovery, where their visual aesthetic - heavy on lo-fi photography and tropical motifs - complemented their sonic output. Critically, they are viewed as a quintessential example of the DIY electronic spirit of the early 2010s, utilizing bedroom production techniques to achieve a professional, high-concept atmosphere. They occupy a cultural space between the synth-heavy indie of Washed Out and the more experimental, sample-based textures of Coyote Clean Up.
