Southern Shores

Southern Shores is a Canadian electronic duo, primarily consisting of Ben Dalton and Jamie Townsend, who emerged during the peak of the chillwave movement in the early 2010s. Originally hailing from Nova Scotia, their music is deeply informed by coastal geography, though they have spent significant time in Berlin and Toronto.

Their sound identity is defined by a 'Balearic-meets-bedroom' aesthetic, characterized by heavy reverb, tropical percussion (marimbas, shakers), and the use of vocal micro-samples as rhythmic hooks. While contemporaries like Washed Out or Toro y Moi moved toward psych-rock or funk, Southern Shores remained dedicated to the atmospheric, sample-heavy electronic space, bridging the gap between Swedish pop-ambient acts like Korallreven and the more rhythmic side of downtempo. Their career arc shows a transition from the hazy, tape-saturated textures of 'Atlantic' toward a more polished, house-inflected sound on later releases like 'Loja' and 'Anyplace There Is.' Critically, they are regarded as masters of the 'vacation-as-aesthetic' genre, creating music that functions as a high-fidelity soundtrack for escapism and travel.
