Pigalle is a seminal project in the French alternative scene, formed in 1982 by the polymathic François Hadji-Lazaro. While Hadji-Lazaro was simultaneously leading the more aggressive punk outfit Les Garçons Bouchers, Pigalle served as a vehicle for a more nuanced, folk-influenced exploration of 'chanson réaliste.'
The band is defined by its leader's ability to play dozens of instruments, ranging from traditional folk tools like the bagpipes and accordion to standard rock guitars. This versatility allowed Pigalle to bridge the gap between the 1980s French punk explosion (Bérurier Noir) and the more poetic, acoustic-leaning 'nouvelle scène française' of the 1990s (Têtes Raides).
