Platinum Blonde is a seminal Canadian New Wave and pop-rock outfit that defined the visual and sonic landscape of the 1980s in North America. Formed in 1982 by Mark Holmes, the band initially operated as a power trio heavily influenced by The Police, emphasizing rhythmic precision and reggae-tinged rock.
However, they quickly pivoted toward a more synth-heavy, glam-influenced sound that aligned them with the Second British Invasion and acts like Duran Duran. Their career trajectory is marked by massive commercial success in Canada, where they achieved multi-platinum status and became icons of the MuchMusic era. The addition of Kenny MacLean in 1985 signaled a shift toward a more sophisticated, four-piece arrangement with expanded keyboard textures. Critically, they were often viewed as a bridge between the radio-friendly rock of Loverboy and the stylish synth-pop of their UK contemporaries. Despite a breakup in 1989, their legacy as 'the band made for video' persists, cemented by their 2010 induction into the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame.
