Porter is a seminal Mexican indie rock band from Guadalajara, emerging in 2004 as a central figure in the country's alternative scene. Their early sound was defined by the 'feminoid' vocal range of original frontman Juan Son, whose eccentric delivery and bilingual surrealism helped the band break into the mainstream with the EP Donde Los Ponys Pastan.
Their 2007 LP Atemahawke solidified their status as experimental pioneers, blending math-rock precision with whimsical, space-rock sensibilities. After a hiatus following a 2008 Coachella performance, the band reformed in 2013 with David Velasco on vocals. This second era marked a significant stylistic shift toward 'Moctezuma,' an album that traded indie-pop quirkiness for a cinematic, pre-hispanic aesthetic. Critically, Porter is regarded as a bridge between the 90s 'Rock en Español' movement and the modern Mexican indie scene, influencing a generation of artists with their willingness to embrace 'weirdness' and cultural heritage simultaneously. They remain a staple of the Vive Latino circuit and a key reference point for Mexican art rock.
