SHERBETS represents the 'cold' and 'artistic' side of Japanese rock legend Kenichi Asai (formerly of Blankey Jet City). Formed in 1996 and solidified in 1998, the band moved away from the aggressive, greaser-rock aesthetic of Asai's past toward a more experimental, keyboard-driven sound.
The inclusion of Kumiko 'Fucci' Fukushi was the catalyst for this shift, introducing a dream-pop and new wave sensibility that contrasted with Asai's jagged Gretsch guitar work. Their discography is characterized by a high level of consistency, maintaining a 'noir' aesthetic that blends alternative rock with psychedelic and art-rock flourishes. Critically, they are viewed as a premier example of 'adult' J-rock, prioritizing mood and surrealist storytelling over radio-friendly hooks.
