Puerto Muerto

Haunting, theatrical indie rock that feels like a ghost story told in a smoky basement. Tense harmonies and dusty Americana for the brokenhearted and the night owls.

Intro

Puerto Muerto sounds like the soundtrack to a noir film set in a forgotten Midwestern town. It is a world of creaky floorboards, parlor pianos, and the kind of acoustic guitar that feels like it has been sitting in a dusty attic for decades. The music balances a vaudevillian sense of drama with a raw, indie-rock vulnerability that makes every song feel like a private confession whispered in a crowded room.

What truly sets them apart is the palpable tension between Tim Kelley and Christa Meyer. Their vocal harmonies are not the sweet, blended sounds of traditional folk; they are sharp, contrasting, and often heavy with the emotional weight of their real-life relationship. This 'divorce-core' energy gives their music a unique edge, where the theatricality of dark cabaret meets the brutal honesty of a dissolving marriage.

Start with 'Drumming for Pistols' to hear the band at their most emotionally charged and sonically refined. It is a stunning document of a creative partnership reaching its peak just as the personal relationship collapses, offering a listening experience that is as uncomfortable as it is beautiful.

Puerto Muerto is a Chicago indie rock band composed of formerly married couple Tim Kelley and Christa Meyer. The couple broke up while in the process of writing and recording "Drumming for Pistols", released in February 2010. Critics such as Jim DeRogatis of the Chicago Sun Times hailed the album as "stunningly powerful" partly because it is emotionally grounded in the couple's demise. Both artists now have new solo projects: Christa Meyer's band is called Man is Man, and Tim Kelley is now recording as Moss Garvey.
