Bright 80s synth-pop layered with tribal chants and global rhythms. Earnest, melodic, and subtly political music for wide-open spaces.
Red Box offers a unique intersection of 1980s high-gloss production and a genuine fascination with global folk traditions. Their sound is characterized by shimmering synthesizers that share space with tribal-style chanting and organic percussion, creating a feeling of 'techno-pastoralism.' It is music that feels both deeply rooted in the British New Wave tradition and strangely untethered from any specific geography.
What truly distinguishes them is the intellectual weight behind the pop hooks. While contemporaries were writing about neon nights, Simon Toulson-Clarke was penning sardonic critiques of American media and military intervention, often wrapping these messages in anthemic, choral-heavy arrangements. The use of vocal layering is particularly striking, often sounding more like a village gathering than a studio session.
Start with 'The Circle and the Square' to hear their peak creative fusion. The hit 'Lean on Me (Ah-Li-Ayo)' serves as the perfect gateway, showcasing how they could turn an unconventional, chant-based structure into a massive radio success without losing its soul.
Red Box is a British pop group founded by Simon Toulson-Clarke and Julian Close. Active from the early 1980s to the present day, they scored two UK top ten hits with the singles "Lean on Me (Ah-Li-Ayo)" in 1985 and "For America" in 1986, both of which were included on their debut album, The Circle & the Square. Red Box returned briefly in 1990 with the single "Train" and the second album Motive, and again in 2010 with the third album Plenty, released in October 2010. The group is now led by singer-songwriter Simon Toulson-Clarke with a third line-up of supporting players. In February 2019, the band released "This Is What We Came For", the first single from their fourth studio album Chase the Setting Sun, which was released in September 2019. In July 2019, they released a second single "Gods & Kings", also from Chase the Setting Sun.
